Back in the 1860's, George & Sarah Metcalfe decide to move from their
home in Hawes,Yorkshire,
to start a new life in Ulverston in search of
work & a better way of life. George,
unable to find work, sets himself up
with a shoe repair shop & soon the Metcalfe's
were able to move into a
bigger house that would support their new family.
Madge was
born shortly followed by Sarah, when the girls grew up,
Madge joined the local church
choir were she was admired by Arthur
Jefferson, a local play writer & theatre manager,
the two shortly wed, then
moved out of the town due to Arthur's work. They started
a family & in
1890 Madge returns to her mother's house to give birth to the legendary
Stan.
Stan's mischief starts to bloom leaving his cousin & closest friend Mary
to
try & keep him on the straight & narrow. Stan spent most of his early
days living
with his grandparents due to the fact that he was ill, making it
difficult for him
to travel with his mum & dad. He eventually makes a full
recovery enabling him to
join his parents when they move to Bishop
Auckland. Stan developed his theatre talent
before eventually joining
Fred Karno's comedy troupe to tour America were he eventually
finds
fame.
